5 Fragen an Künstler*innen: Soraya Leila, choreographer/Choreographin

Zur Person/über mich/about: Soraya Leila (born 1993) is a Swiss-Moroccan choreographer of hot stuff  based in Zürich.

For 2025/2026, she is Tanzhaus Zürich Accomplice with her new solo work Coming Soon. In 2023/24 she is TanzPlan Ost Associated Artist with her latest group piece TURN ON, premiere at Tanzhaus Zürich in October 2024, followed by a tour in Eastern Switzerland in Phönix Theater and Bachturnhalle, and internationally in 2025.

She currently works on the theme of pleasure, trying to define what pleasure is and translate it into a choreographic score to redefine the narrative around female sexuality, body autonomy, and empowerment. Her present medium is combining movement and grappling techniques, to create a vocabulary of submission/dominance, power dynamics, and abstract components of grappling. She explores female pleasure, with an intersectional decolonial feminist perspective. Her works provide a platform for MENA female-identifying WINTA* artists. Earlier research and works question the preservation and transmission of cultural identity and the question of the female Arab body representation.

Her dance career includes engagements and collaborations with choreographers and companies such as Archipelago, Cie 7273, Humanhood, Theater Pforzheim, Compagnie Mafalda, Horizon Vertical and many more. She is also the rehearsal director and choreographic assistant of Zurich’s Cie O. and guest choreographer for the next production of the up-and-coming company Cie WILD LIFE.

She got her Master in Choreography at ZHdK Zürich in June 2024. She graduated as a contemporary dancer from SEAD Salzburg in 2017 and from CFPArts Geneva in 2014.
